She watched them sleep for what seemed hours from the high window until her body grew colder than the stone sill she perched upon. As the wedding neared, she bought some finer things: a veal roast for supper, a single pearl for the dowry. One she entered and met with a sharp rebuff, which she appeared to receive unmoved.
